This taper was designed especially for western rivers where delicate presentations are required in windy conditions. Accurate casts can be made with just the tip of the rod for a very tight loop; yet for windy conditions or when distance is needed, the thick belly will load the butt section of modern graphite rods producing phenomenal line speed to penetrate the air. The Super Floatation Tip, with a welded loop, acts as an indicator to detect subtle takes when fishing subsurface. It also facilitates quick leader changes. The AgentX coating and XS technology delivers smooth casts in all fishing conditions, and the two-coloured line shows exactly the loading point of the head. Dualtone is a system perfected by RIO that marks the sweet spot of a fly line by providing an obvious colour change in the line and giving anglers a reference point of where a particular line loads their rod and how much line to strip in before making a cast. This year we have changed the RIO Grand to incorporate this feature and bring it into line with the RIO Gold and WindCutter II lines that have always been built with the DualTone system. Our new Trout LT and Indicator lines also feature the DualTone system, as does the new colour RIO Gold The design of every fly line taper, its most likely application and each line size are all carefully taken into account and the location of the colour change is unique to each individual fly line. We test each line on a selection of rods and find the ideal place where the rod loads and begin the colour change there. With the DualTone system it is easy to see how much to strip in, where to pick up a cast, how much line to hold in the air when false casting and when to make the final cast. Welded Loops RIO was the first company to manufacture all its premium lines with a neat welded loop in the front end. Due to popular demand, RIO now also puts a welded loop in the back end of each premium trout, specialty and saltwater line. There is no quicker way to rig a fly line than to tie the backing to a loop with an improved clinch knot (or by using a large loop in the backing - allowing lines to be switched quickly) and the new rear welded loops from RIO allow an angler to do just that. Never before has it been so easy or fast to rig a new fly line to a reel and get out fishing! Agent X Traditionally, getting a line to float has required mixing a bunch of tiny glass balls (cleverly called micro spheres) into the line?s coating. More glass balls equals higher floating line. But this creates a problem in that it leaves less room for plastisol (the good stuff that smoothes the surface) and the micro spheres can create a rougher, microscopically abrasive coating that results in a structurally weaker fly line which can crack. So, after years of experimenting with unique compounds and plenty of on-the-water R&D, the RIO Labcoats in their dust-free rooms, employed a unique element six times more buoyant than those made by our competitors. But it took a huge revelation in the manufacturing process to get that element into play. This revolutionary process is called Fusion Technology (used in all AgentX and SFT lines). By simultaneously processing this super-buoyant undercoating with an ultra-smooth outer coating, the results are the smoothest, most durable, and highest floating fly lines imaginable.
