The Ron Thompson Axellerator is a beachcaster rod that has established itself as one of the most popular but affordable rods for the sea fishing market, it has a strong reputation and is perfect for anglers looking to cast extreme distances.
This rod is crafted from the latest in carbon fibre technology which is IM7 carbon, this makes the rod light, strong and much more resistant to damage that rods may get from regular use, rods made from carbon are also much more affordable and have increased sensitivity which allows you to feel a bite from a fish much easier, carbon rods are also very flexible.
This rod has Fuji silicon carbide rings which is advanced technology that allows very low friction on your line, the rings are also very lightweight so it reduces the overall weight of the rod itself and these rings are very durable so you won’t run into problems with rust, they are perfect for all weather conditions and built to last.
The Axellerator comes with premium quality Japanese shrink wrap which is a material that covers the whole length of the rod, this wrap protects the rod against any corrosion that would occur from salt water so you can be certain that this rod will be fine in different weather conditions and different environments.
The rod itself measures 13ft 6inches in length which is 415cms, it comes in 2 different sections which means its very easy to transport without taking up much luggage space so is perfect if you like to travel within the UK or even for those who want to fish in international waters, this rod will also cast 4 – 8oz depending on the users choice of weight.
The Ron Thompson brand has been around since the 1970s and has a strong reputation and reviews from customers who like what they put out, the brand name offers a wide range of products but well known to be great value for money when it comes to rods.
This product offers precision in a very compact design but also has an affordable price point which is great if you are not yet in a position to purchase a higher end rod that may be made of graphene, this rod can easily be used in a wide range of situations such as rocks, heavy ground and cliff fishing but you can also take it down your local beach.
The Axellerator is a great beachcaster which offers superb value for money and has a strong following among the sea fishing crowd, it’s well known to be ideal for fishing on the North east coast and due to weighing only 796 grams it’s very lightweight and easy to carry.
Overall this rod is very aesthetically pleasing and well built to handle a wide range of rough environments, this rod can handle so many different fish and grounds that it’s perfect for many sea fishing situations, the price is very affordable and materials used are lightweight but very high end for the price tag, this is an ideal rod for someone who wants value for money and a rod that can handle day to day wear and tear.
I have long been a fan of Ron Thompson's cheap and cheerful shore rods, and have seen them take an incredible beating and keep going strong.I always wondered what Ron could do given a more generous budget, and specifically could he seriously challenge the likes of Century and Zziplex. The Axellerator certainly looks the part, with top quality fittings, and unlike a rod I ordered direct from Century(which took nearly two years to arrive!)fits together perfectly.I particularly like the very Penn like adjustable reel seat, which unlike even the best coasters securely holds big reels like the Penn 535 and ABU 9000.The butt is unfashionably large in diameter compared to something like a Zziplex profile and will not suit Ladies or men with smaller hands, but this is one extremely powerful rod.The only rod I have felt quite as steely, was the Conoflex tournament extreme Neil Kelland used back in the 90's to reach 300 yards! I would urge anyone to use the reel low down, and use a flat arc pendulum style with a very long drop, right down to the right hand, as this tends to tame the very stiffest rods.I was curious just how little it was possible to spend and still achieve 200+ yard performance. To this end I teamed the Ron with a Shakespeare Atlantis CT multiplier,25 quid brand new! filled with 0.31 mm Sufix , 50 lb leader and 150 gms.My best cast in poor conditions, gusty side wind, went 215 paces, with several just a few paces less. For the total outlay of well under £150, I thought a very impressive performance.Unfortunately though the price point might tempt beginners, it is no rod to learn to cast with, feeling harsh even with a well matched casting style. Also rock anglers looking for extra power might find it's ultra fast casting action, extremely unforgiving in tight spaces. In summary I would definitely recommend the Axellerator to a competent caster looking to try a real tournament style rod on a tight budget. However be warned, as many Zziplex and Century buyers have discovered, if your casting isn't up to the mark a very powerful rod may actually lose you distance.
